As part of my extended major I intend to use my Application that manipulates an IOS’s inputs and outputs to produce an installation that people can interactive with, using the phone as some sort of sensor, I hope that it will be a useful device in marketing the app and people will see the potential of the app.

I have been looking around for some examples of where people have done similar things with mobile devices and i stumbled across a Vimeo channel with a few great examples. This first example shows how many mobile devices can be used and synchronised to create a performance piece, it is quite attractive and I can imagine quite effective in a dark environment. this kind of installation could be easily achieved using LEDs and speakers but whoever built this installation wanted to use mobile devices specifically to advertise the device in some way.

The next example i found was looking at getting people to use their mobile devices to call a set phone number and then using the phone number users call from to display graphics on a screen, in this case to generate flowers using the digits from the phone number as variables in the flowers generation. This is similar to a project I did in my second year called inthel00p where I asked people to submit their names using the facebook API and then generated a note within a sound loop of 8 notes.

My installation and application will be slightly different to both of these, What I want to achieve is to be able to use IOS device as the processor for an installation, which may mean that i need to connect a laptop with additional outputs that create the installation but use the IOS device as the input device. I can see this being really interesting especially if you could use say an iPhones Gyro to detect motion and display graphics and or data on a projector screen so that people can interact with it, there are a number of possibiltys involving sound and video etc… I am going to be thinking about what to do for the installation as I start to develop the application. What I am able to do will become clear as I discover what is possible to program.
